All Seven UN Chief Candidates Receive Veto In Latest Poll
All Seven Candidates for UN Chief Receive Veto, Race Deadlocked
UNITED NATIONS - All seven candidates vying to become the next United Nations Secretary-General received a vote of "discourage" — effectively a veto — from at least one permanent member of the UN Security Council in the latest informal straw poll, a diplomat said on Friday.
Historic Deadlock in Straw Poll
Friday's poll was the sixth informal poll and the first time the Security Council used colored ballots to distinguish vetoes. The five permanent members — Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States — used colored straws to indicate their vetoes, while the 10 elected members used plain markers. For the first time, no candidate was left without a P5 veto.
Who Is Leading The Race
Costa Rica's Rebeca Grynspan remained the frontrunner. She received 9 "encourage" votes, the highest, but also got 5 "discourage" votes including 2 from P5 members. She has led in all previous five polls.
The other top contenders are Rafael Grossi of Argentina, head of the UN nuclear watchdog IAEA, and Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett of Guyana, former Foreign Minister. Both also reportedly received 2 red discourage votes from P5 members.
Macky Sall Withdraws From Race
A day after the poll, former President of Senegal Macky Sall withdrew from the race on Saturday. In a statement, he said he hoped to contribute to the emergence of a consensus candidate within the Security Council.
US Position and New Candidates
According to US media reports, Washington opposes all seven current contenders. US Ambassador Mike Waltz said: "We have always said we just simply need the best." Diplomats say new names are now being floated including Nickolay Mladenov, High Representative for Gaza, Lana Nusseibeh of UAE, and Feridun Sinirlioglu of Turkey.
The outgoing Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres of Portugal, ends his second five-year term on December 31, 2026. To be formally recommended, a candidate needs at least 9 votes and no veto from the P5.
