ATLANTA, Georgia – A traditional group photograph of G20 foreign ministers was cancelled in Atlanta after European representatives objected to appearing alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, highlighting continuing diplomatic divisions over Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The photograph had been expected to take place on Friday, October 30, at the beginning of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. However, the United States removed the photo session from the official agenda after several participating countries expressed opposition to being pictured with the Russian diplomat.
European Representatives Oppose Joint Photograph
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul made clear that European representatives would not participate in a shared photograph with Lavrov. He said relations with Russia could not be treated as normal under the current circumstances.
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski also supported the decision to cancel the photograph, saying he was not alone in opposing an appearance alongside the Russian foreign minister.
According to diplomatic accounts, approximately one-third of the participating delegations, including representatives from Australia and Canada, had concerns about appearing in the same photograph as Lavrov.
Marco Rubio Removes Photo Session From Agenda
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is hosting the discussions, decided to remove the traditional group photograph from the programme. US officials indicated that the decision was intended to prevent the disagreement from becoming a major distraction during the diplomatic gathering.
Lavrov nevertheless attended the meeting and participated in the discussions alongside representatives of other G20 members.
Ukraine War Remains a Major Source of Tension
The disagreement reflects continuing divisions between Russia and Western governments following Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. European governments have maintained support for Ukraine and continued to criticize Russian military actions.
Russia’s participation in the Atlanta meeting also comes amid disagreements over recent US decisions concerning Moscow, including sanctions waivers and energy-related arrangements. Ukraine has raised concerns about developments in Washington’s approach to Russia.
The diplomatic discussions are also taking place against a wider backdrop of international challenges, including tensions involving Iran, global trade, tariffs, energy security and important maritime shipping routes.
G20 Faces Challenges in Reaching Common Ground
The absence of the traditional group photograph has become a visible example of the political disagreements affecting the international forum. Although the photograph is largely ceremonial, it traditionally represents cooperation among participating economies.
Diplomats are continuing their discussions in Atlanta ahead of the G20 leaders’ summit scheduled to take place in Miami in December 2026.
With disagreements over Ukraine, Russia and other international issues continuing, the meeting faces significant challenges in producing a unified position among its members.
NGN News will continue following the diplomatic developments and their implications for international relations.
