María Corina Machado Makes First Public Address Since Returning to Venezuela
CARACAS, Venezuela — October 29, 2026: Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado has delivered her first public press conference since returning to the country after nearly ten months abroad.
Machado returned to Venezuela on October 25, 2026, following an extended period outside the country. Her arrival drew large crowds of supporters, many waving Venezuelan flags and chanting “Libertad,” the Spanish word for “freedom.”
Speaking in Caracas on Thursday, Machado described a democratic transition as “irreversible” and said she had returned to continue her political mission. She also called for a peaceful process that would address the country’s political crisis and provide a path toward new presidential elections.
Machado said the proposed transition plan points toward presidential elections in 2027. However, no official election date has been announced. Interim President Delcy Rodríguez has also said elections will take place under a renewed electoral authority, without specifying a timetable.
The opposition leader was outside Venezuela for around ten months before her return. She had left the country to receive the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize after spending a period in hiding amid political tensions following Venezuela’s disputed 2024 presidential election.
Her return comes as Venezuelan political figures discuss electoral and institutional reforms. Machado said she intends to mobilize citizens and help Venezuelans participate in the electoral process, including those who are not currently registered to vote.
Her first public address has renewed attention on Venezuela’s political future, the possibility of elections in 2027, and the challenges of establishing a process that Venezuelans consider credible and inclusive.
