James Morrison Leads West Brom From Relegation Trouble to Fourth Place

By NGN News English | November 2, 2026

West Bromwich Albion are enjoying an impressive revival under head coach James Morrison, moving from the threat of relegation last season to fourth place in the English Championship table.

The Baggies strengthened their promotion hopes with a 3-1 away victory over West Ham United at the London Stadium on Saturday, October 31. The result lifted West Brom to 24 points from 13 league matches, placing them fourth and just two points behind the automatic promotion positions.

The victory also continued a strong recent run. West Brom have collected 10 points from their last four league matches and taken 13 points from seven away games this season.

Morrison’s impact is particularly notable given the club’s difficult position earlier in 2026. He initially took charge on an interim basis in February after the departure of Eric Ramsay, with Albion struggling near the bottom of the Championship and facing the possibility of relegation to League One.

Under Morrison, the team gradually improved its performances and secured Championship survival. The club subsequently appointed him head coach on a permanent two-year contract in April.

The former West Brom midfielder has now overseen a significant change in the team’s fortunes. His side’s latest victory over West Ham has placed the Baggies firmly in the promotion conversation.

Speaking after the win, Morrison described the performance as complete and said he welcomed the growing expectations around the club. However, he also urged his players and supporters to remain grounded, stressing that the Championship is a demanding competition in which results can change quickly.

West Brom’s fourth-place position puts them in the play-off places, while the gap to the automatic promotion spots remains narrow. With plenty of matches still to play, maintaining consistency will be essential if the club hopes to challenge for a return to the Premier League.

For Baggies supporters, the transformation from last season’s relegation concerns to the current promotion push has brought renewed excitement at The Hawthorns.
